The Upcoming Supreme Court Cases That Matter Most to States and Localities [Governing.org, 9/23/17]: In the term that starts Oct. 2, the justices will hear cases that could drastically alter the country's political, financial and social landscape.

II. Defining the Political System: Federalism and Checks and Balances [See TOPICS 11-15 in the 5th edition of Constitutional Law] Here are recent articles that are relevant to this unit:

The American Presidency [TOPIC 15]

The Stephen Curry snub is one of many times Trump has tried to preempt embarrassment [Wash Post, 9/23/17]: Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry struck a hopeful note Friday when he explained why he wouldn’t be accepting an invitation to visit President Trump at the White House. “Hopefully that will inspire some change when it comes to what we tolerate in this country,” Curry said, as others on his championship team considered whether to accept.

The Racial Demagoguery of Trump’s Assaults on Colin Kaepernick and Steph Curry [New Yorker, 9/23/17]: Trump, who began his real-estate career with a series of discriminatory housing deals in New York City, and his political career with a racist calumny against Barack Obama, has repeatedly defined his Presidency with a rhetoric that signals solidarity to resentful souls who see the Other as the singular cause of their troubles. Trump stokes a bilious disdain for every African-American who dares raise a voice to protest the injustices of this country.

Willie Brown: Democrats need Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton to get out of the way [SF Chron, 9/23/17]: Sen. Bernie Sanders’ swing through California and Hillary Clinton’s book tour underscore the Democrats’ problem in the aftermath of the 2016 election. The problem: The party’s two main factions are clinging to the leaders of yesterday rather than looking forward. 

Is Single Payer Becoming a Litmus Test for Democrats? [KQED, 9/23/17]: The race for governor heated up a notch in San Francisco Friday morning, as Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom waded into the debate over creating a government-run or single-payer health care system in California, prompting a caustic response from his chief Democratic opponent. 

Morain: Army of Obama’s aides running for office to fight off Trump agenda [Sac Bee, 9/22/17]: Buffy Wicks, who grew up in a trailer outside of Auburn, sat in ZoĆ« Kleinfeld’s rented West Oakland duplex last week explaining why she’s running for California Assembly, and recalled a night watching C-SPAN in the Roosevelt Room with the president and senior White House staff.

A Tale of Two States: California Loses and Texas Wins Under GOP Health Plan [KQED, 9/22/17]: California stands to lose billions in health care funding under the GOP’s latest plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, resulting in millions of Californians losing coverage.

UC Berkeley’s ‘Free Speech Week’ officially canceled, appeared to be set-up from the start [SJ Merc, 9/23/17]: In an email chain obtained by the Bay Area News Group, Lucian Wintrich, one of the supposed speakers, told UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof Saturday morning that the event had been merely an attention grab from the start. “It was known that they didn’t intend to actually go through with it last week, and completely decided on Wednesday,” Wintrich wrote.

International Law, Citizenship and Immigration [TOPIC 40-42]

UN establishes investigation into Islamic State crimes in Iraq [Jurist, 9/22/17]: The UN Security Council voted Thursday to establish an investigation into the Islamic State over possible war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Iraq. IS has previously been accused by the UN of targeting civilians and having an "absolute disregard for human life."

Podcast: Killing the Watchdog [Newseum, 9/22/17]: How quickly can a despotic government dismantle a free press? In this episode of The First Five, we talk to Abdulhamit Bilici, former editor-in-chief of the largest newspaper in Turkey, now living in exile after President Erdogan’s takeover of the press and imprisonment of over 150 journalists.
