II. Defining the Political

California
lawmakers pass bill prohibiting state assistance in enforcement of federal
marijuana laws [Jurist, 6/3/17]: The California
State Assembly passed a bill on Thursday with the bare minimum 41 out of 80
votes that, if passed by the Senate, will prohibit state and local authorities
from assisting federal agencies in the enforcement of marijuana laws without a
court order.
The

urges travel ban, end to political correctness [Politico, 6/4/17]: On Sunday, he tweeted: 'We must stop
being politically correct.'

Trump's order may be decided quickly by justices [WSJ, 6/3/17]: Legality of Trump’s order may be decided quickly
by justices. In
legal filings late Thursday night, the Justice Department asked the Supreme
Court to intervene on an emergency basis and stay those lower-court rulings.
That would allow the administration to implement its planned ban right away,
even as litigation continues on the order’s underlying legality.

Calif. Supreme Court:
judges must scrutinize prosecutor decisions to exclude jurors [Jurist,
6/3/17]: The California Supreme Court, in an opinion overturning three Kern
County attempted murder convictions for alleged jury tampering, unanimously
ruled on Thursday that judges must thoroughly examine prosecutor decisions to
exclude potential jurors to ensure there is no racial bias.

Privacy: Innocent
Until Your Mug Shot Is on the Internet [NY Times / The Marshall Project, 6/3/17]: Federal authorities have
considered the release of a booking photograph an invasion of privacy, and in
its ruling last year, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals agreed, overruling a
1996 decision that allowed the release. The Free Press appealed this decision
to the United States Supreme Court; last month, the court declined to hear the
case.
