Posts for August 2, 2015
These are the posts that are accumulated in our newsletter which goes out every 4-6 days during the school year. The posts are organized by the major units in our Con Law (5th ed.) student textbook.

I. Introduction to Law, the Constitution, and the Supreme Court [See TOPICS 1-10 in the 5th edition of Constitutional Law] Here are some recent articles that are relevant to this unit:

John Paul Stevens says he likes Chief Justice Roberts' style [ABA Journ., 8/1/15]: In 2014, retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens published Six Amendments: How and Why We Should Change the Constitution. And in a short but punchy speech to a luncheon held Friday during the 2015 ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago, Stevens praised the current justices for taking positive steps in the direction of implementing at least some of his recommendations.

Why we should ignore Justice Scalia's nasty zingers [Wash Post, 7/31/15]: Justice Antonin Scalia ended up on the losing side of two of the biggest cases from the Supreme Court’s just-concluded term: King v. Burwell, the Obamacare case, and Obergefell v. Hodges, the same-sex marriage case. But his dissenting opinions were probably quoted more often, and more extensively, than the majority opinions that laid down the law

Pressure mounts for Joe Biden to run for president [Wash Post, 8/1/15]:  Joe Biden has never ruled out making a third try for the presidency, and as his self-declared, end-of-summer deadline to make a decision approaches, there are fresh signals that pressure is growing on him to do so.

Conservative donor Koch urges end to 'corporate cronyism' [US News, 8/1/15]: Billionaire industrialist and conservative political donor Charles Koch welcomed a group of roughly 450 like-minded fundraisers to one of his twice-annual conferences Saturday by challenging them to advocate for ending "corporate cronyism" - even if those policies help their businesses.

Trump and Sanders surge, Congress stalls, voters seethe [McClatchy DC, 7/32/15]:  In this summer of political gloom, the drumbeat from the American heartland to Washington has been relentless: Fix the economy. Fix the immigration system. Talk to each other.
