Court Tosses an Obama-Era Climate Rule That Trump Had Defended [Bloomberg / CNS, 8/8/18]: The Trump administration’s attempt to defend one aspect of Barack Obama’s climate agenda failed as a federal court tossed a regulation to limit harmful chemicals used in air conditioners and refrigerators.

Poll: Trump support eroding with his base [Politico, 8/7/17]: In a fresh survey from CNN, conducted by the independent research company SSRS, Trump’s “strong approval” among Republicans has dropped from 73 percent in February, shortly after he took office, to 59 percent now. Overall, 83 percent of Republicans approve of Trump’s performance, with 14 percent disapproving.

DOJ flips on SCOTUS purge case [Election Law blog / Jurist, 8/7/17]: Today, DOJ filed an amicus brief in Husted v. A. Philip Randolph Institute. The case, now at SCOTUS, is about whether the NVRA prevents certain types of purges.  

Hacking the Vote: Why Voting Systems Aren’t as Secure as You Might Think [KQED, 8/8/17]: While President Trump appears to be debating whether the voting system in the U.S. was compromised by the Russians, hackers at Defcon were hard at work trying to understand the vulnerabilities.

Reason in the Time of Trump’s Transgender Tweet: The Military Benefits of Fortifying Pro-Dignity and Anti-Discrimination Norms [Justia, 8/8/17]: Professor Wexler explains why the U.S. military would benefit from strengthening its pro-dignity and anti-discrimination norms, rather than implementing divisive discriminatory policies such as President Trump’s recent tweet regarding transgender service members. Wexler points to concrete ways inclusivity fortifies the military and calls upon leadership to embrace inclusive policies.
