Why The Russia
Investigation Matters And Why You Should Care [NPR, 5/24/17]: There is a divide in this country — and it's not the
one between Democrats and Republicans. It's the one between people who are
deeply captivated by politics and those more engaged with other priorities and
"real" lives. First Flynn’s resignation, then the Comey firing and now
Kushner’s reported backchannel ambitions — the steady beat of stories can feel
overwhelming. Ultimately, writes NPR Politics Digital Editor Domenico
Montanaro, the stakes make it worth caring about. It all comes down to whether
you can trust this country’s electoral process — whether the roots of our
democracy are healthy.

Trump's Travel Ban 'Drips
with Intolerance' on Its Way to the Supreme Court [New Yorker, 5/26/17]: In a
ruling, on Thursday, that left in place a lower court’s stay on President Donald
Trump’s travel ban, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth
Circuit went well beyond saying that the White House’s case was mistaken,
misguided, or just inadequate. Instead, Chief Judge Roger Gregory wrote that
behind the arguments in defense of the ban lay “a dangerous idea”—namely, that
“this Court lacks the authority to review high-level government policy of the
sort here.”
Willie Brown: Trump shoves his way across the world stage pSF
Chron, 5/27/17]: President Trump’s seven days in May will go down as one of the
worst-ever trips abroad ever undertaken by a purported leader of the free
world.
Russia scandal casts uncertainty over Kushner’s future
role [Politico, 5/27/17]: Once the untouchable son-in-law in a White
House where top aides jockey for the president’s ear, Jared Kushner has now
been cast in a new role: reassuring people that he’s not going to resign, while
colleagues question whether he can survive politically.
Trump considers major changes amid escalating Russia
crisis [Wash Post, 5/27/17]: President Trump and his advisers, seeking
to contain the escalating Russia crisis that threatens to consume his
presidency, are considering a retooling of his senior staff and the creation of
a “war room” within the White House, according to several aides and outside
Trump allies.
Saudis on Trump’s anti-Islamic rhetoric: Just a gimmick
to win votes [McClatchy, 5/27/17]: Donald Trump described Muslims as sick
people who have hatred on their minds and he proposed banning them from
entering the United States. Yet surprisingly, many people in Saudi Arabia, a
nation considered the birthplace of Islam where citizens are required to be
Muslim, don’t hold his words against him.

U.S. to increase number of refugees allowed in, reversing
a sharp decline under Trump [LA Times, 5/27/17]: The sudden and quiet
change in the State Department’s policy will affect tens of thousands of
refugees who have completed the nearly two-year-long application process but
were waiting in limbo during the legal fights over Trump’s executive orders
attempting to bar refugees.
