But it has left open the possibility that some kinds of political gamesmanship in redistricting may be too extreme. This piece, by the Times’ legal writer Adam Liptak, is a must-read on the topic of gerrymandering.

Voting advocates call Supreme Court's decision not to hear North Carolina case a win [USA Today / McClatchy / Politico, 5/15/17]: The Supreme Court sidestepped the politically divisive issue of voting rights Monday, refusing to reconsider a lower court's ruling that a North Carolina photo-ID law discriminated against black voters "with almost surgical precision."

Republicans may be reaching their breaking point with Trump [Politico, 5/16/17]: Within hours of Tuesday's report by The New York Times, there was a distinct shift among congressional Republicans, who until now have mostly resisted criticizing Trump, let alone demanding the president be held to account for all he says or does.

Angry Trump tweet targets daily press briefings [FAC, 5/16/17]: Unhappy with coverage over the firing of FBI director James Comey, President Donald Trump tweeted that he could not guarantee his press secretaries’ accuracy so it might be best to switch to written responses.

San Luis Obispo teacher resigns after penning anti-gay letter to student newspaper [LA Times, 5/16/17]: A San Luis Obispo High School teacher has resigned amid controversy over a letter he wrote to the school’s student newspaper that cited a Bible verse saying sinners and those who commit homosexual acts “deserve to die.” 

Louisiana House Tries to Stop Removal of Confederate Monuments [CNS, 5/17/17]: Still fighting the Civil War, after hours of heated debate, the Louisiana House on Monday night approved a bill to protect Confederate monuments statewide.
