ACLU alleges police used life-threatening weapons at Standing Rock protest [Jurist, 11/24/16]: The ACLU reports that tear gas, rubber bullets, concussion grenades, mace, and water cannons have been used on the protesters. The Morton Country Sherriff, Kirchemeir, rejected some of those claims in a press conference. The protesters stated that the force was excessive and that the protests were peaceful while the police departments contend that the force was necessary in response to fires being started along a police barricade.

Voting Rights in the Age of Trump [NY Times’ Op-Ed, 11/19/16]: In June 2013, the Supreme Court ruled in Shelby County v. Holder that states with a long history of racial discrimination no longer needed to approve any proposed changes to their voting procedures with the federal government, as had long been required under the Voting Rights Act. That meant this year's presidential election was the first in 50 years without the full protections of the act.

Arrest for Refusing to Show Driver's License Upheld [CNS, 11/23/16]: Two police officers who arrested a man for refusing to show his driver’s license reasonably believed they had probable cause to make the arrest and should be granted immunity, the Ninth Circuit ruled Wednesday.
Florida Supreme Court hands down new ruling in fight over death penalty [Orlando Sentinel, 11/23/16]: The Florida Supreme Court on Wednesday threw out the death penalty of a man convicted of murdering a state prison guard, ruling that because his jury did not unanimously recommend a death sentence, he must be resentenced by a new jury.

One that got a lot of traffic had the headline: “FBI Agent Suspected In Hillary Email Leaks Found Dead In Apparent Murder-Suicide.” The story is completely false, but it was shared on Facebook over half a million times.
