[See TOPICS 16-20 in the 5th edition of Constitutional Law] Here are some recent articles that are
relevant to this unit:
A look at California’s most interesting legislative races [AP,
7/15/16]: All 80 seats up for grabs in the California Assembly and half the 40
Senate positions, but the interest is focused most intensely on a handful of
races with the potential to alter the balance of power in Capitol.
Almost 48% of registered California voters cast ballots
in the June primary [AP, 7/15/16]: More than 8.5 million ballots were cast
and counted in the June 7 statewide primary, a turnout that while better than most
presidential years over the past two decades was not as high as some expected.
Did Trump Just Make a Huge Mistake? [Politico,
7/15/16]: It was a clear Indiana day last spring, and Gov. Mike Pence was at a
podium watching his presidential ambitions disappear. Days earlier, Pence had
signed the controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act, a bill that many
claimed would have allowed businesses to use religion as an excuse to
discriminate against customers from the LGBT community.
Clinton's
asymmetric terror war with Trump [Politico, 7/15/16]: The former secretary of state is
determined not to let her reality-star rival win the narrative on national
security. But she has fewer rhetorical weapons than he does.
Legislation and the Legislative
Process (TOPIC 20)
IV. Criminal Law and Procedure (4th, 5th,
6th, and 8th amendments) [See TOPICS 21-28 in
the 5th edition of Constitutional Law] Here are some
recent articles that are relevant to this unit
Democracy Has Its Costs,
Including Your Mug Shot [Bloomberg View, 7/15/16]: A federal appeals court has ruled that the public has no
right to see arrestees’ mug shots, reversing a ruling that has been in place
for 20 years. The case pits the individual’s interest in privacy against the
public’s interest in getting all the information it can about an arrest, which
is the quintessential public government act. My heart says the court got it
right. But my head says that in a functioning democracy, government actions
need to be open to scrutiny, even at the cost of permanent embarrassment to
some of the government’s targets.
V. 1st Amendment
(Speech, Religion, Press and Assembly)
[See TOPICS 29-33 in the 5th edition of Constitutional Law] Here are some recent articles that
are relevant to this unit:
VI. 14th
Amendment, Discrimination, Privacy, Working, Citizenship & Immigration [See TOPICS 34-41 in the 5th edition of Constitutional Law] Here are some recent articles that are relevant to
