Virginia district shuts down schools in aftermath of angry backlash from homework assignment on Islam [NSBA Legal Clips, 12/23/15]: CNN reports Augusta County Schools (ACS), as a safety precaution, closed its schools on Friday of last week after there was angry backlash in the community over a homework assignment on Islam. Social media exploded over the school lesson, a simple drawing assignment, into a caustic discussion about religion and education.

Muslim teacher’s federal suit claims New Jersey district fired her for religious reasons [NSBA Legal Clips, 12/23/15]: Sireen Hashem, a former teacher at Hunterdon Central Regional High School who is Muslim, has filed suit in federal district court alleging religious discrimination, says nj.com. The suit claims that in addition to terminating Hashem based on her religion, the school board then reported her to the FBI.

Principal at North Dakota high school rejects photograph for yearbook of student holding a rifle [NSBA Legal Clips, 12/21/15]: Fargo North High School Principal Andy Dahlen rejected Josh Renville’s yearbook photo selection because it shows him shouldering a rifle, says NBC News. Josh’s father said the picture was “no different then (sic) the pictures in the school library of soldiers during anyone of our nations (sic) wars,” but said Dahlen had claimed the picture would not be allowed in the yearbook because “it’s the law.”

UN: more must be done to protect rights of LGBTI refugees [Jurist, 12/24/15]: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on Thursday announced that, in response to the unique prejudice and violence lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) refugees face, it has implemented a new effort to train humanitarian workers on the protection of minority rights.
