I. Introduction to Law, the Constitution, and the Supreme Court [See TOPICS 1-10 in the 5th edition of Constitutional Law] Here are some recent articles that are relevant to this unit:

Can the Constitution Govern America's Sprawling Empire? [The Atlantic, 12/20/15]: The U.S. Supreme Court struggles to stretch a Constitution written for 13 coastal states to encompass non-contiguous states, dependent nations, insular areas, and a commonwealth.

Chief Justice Roberts Made 'Human Error' In Overlooking Conflict Of Interest [Huff Post, 12/18/15]: The head of the Supreme Court inadvertently participated in a case involving a company where he had a significant financial stake.

Judicial Campaigns and the Appearance of Impropriety [Justia, 12/21/15]: Professor Rotunda comments on the concept of the “appearance of impropriety” that affects the regulation of the conduct of judges. He looks specifically at judicial election campaigns and points out that the statistical data do not support a conclusion a tit for tat relationship between campaign contributions and judicial decisions.
