Assault Weapons Ban Before U.S. Supreme Court [NBC News, 10/11/15]: The U.S. Supreme Court could announce as early as Tuesday whether it will hear a challenge to a suburban Chicago law banning firearms commonly known as assault weapons.

A.C.L.U.'s Own Arguments May Work Against It in Voting Rights Case [NY Times’ “Sidebar,” 10/12/15]: The American Civil Liberties Union weighed in last month on this term’s big Supreme Court voting rights case, the one that will decide the meaning of “one person, one vote.” It took the position embraced by most liberals: that states should be allowed to count everybody in drawing election districts, including unauthorized immigrants, rather than only people eligible to vote. The case is summarized in Constitutional Law (ver. 5.02) at page 199 of the paperback edition.

Louisiana case at center of U.S. Supreme Court hearing on appropriate sentencing for juvenile killers [Phil. Daily News, 10/12/15]: The 17-year-old Scotlandville High School student who shot and killed East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy Charles Hurt in 1963 is long gone, having aged into a 69-year-old Angola inmate who is rehabilitated and deserves a chance to show he should not die behind bars, attorneys for Henry Montgomery will argue Tuesday at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Top Court Refuses Relief to Couple Whose Baby Died of Faith Healing [CNS, 10/12/15]: The Oregon Supreme Court upheld the manslaughter convictions and prison sentences of a couple whose newborn baby died after they chose faith healing over medical treatment. The Followers of Christ church in Oregon City has a history of its members' children dying from this.
